Digital Finance in Africa

In this review, members of the GDI team took a comprehensive approach to analyzing the current state of digital finance across Africa’s 54 countries. Understanding the past, present, and future of this environment empowers us to evaluate whether digital finance is likely to function as a catalyst for a better economic future across the African continent, post-Covid-19 pandemic — and if so, the mechanisms for how this might take place.

Age of Autonomous Weapons Systems

Previous discussions on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS) have primarily focused on either the moral, ethical, and legal obligations of this new type of warfare or specific technical details, rather than approaching it from a systems-based perspective as done here. This resulting report is designed to better inform technology companies and start-ups in the IT, AI, and robotics sectors of foreseeable challenges associated with this field.

Digital Oceans: Open Data

In this review, members of the GDI team dive deep to identify the crucial gaps in ocean data preventing the accurate assessment and understanding of marine ecosystems and human impacts on them. By analyzing key stakeholders and selected case studies, this study identifies the importance of mobilizing inter-sectoral collaboration in generating, unlocking, and providing open access to ocean data — enabling us to better understand the essential role that oceans play not only in our daily lives, but in tackling the climate and biodiversity crises our planet faces.
