Jury briefing
Congratulations on being selected as a juror for our Good Data Assembly! We are truly excited to engage with you.
On this page, you can find all of the information that you may need to make the most of our event.
What is expected of me?
Join the event on Zoom on 9 Feb 2022 at 6.30 GMT. If you are travelling, you can see the event in your local time zone here. This is the Zoom link to the event: https://cmu.zoom.us/j/97080242153?pwd=eHdHV3VOWVFJNko3UGVUd3hydUUyQT09
(Do not share this link!)
Listen to our speakers. We are lucky to have secured three renowned speakers on this issue:
Sam Gilbert, University of Cambridge, Author of “Good Data” (2021)
Dr Johann Laux, University of Oxford
Aidan Peppin, Ada Lovelace Institute
Ask questions in the chat. While the speakers are making their case that personalised advertisement has a net benefit (Sam) and net detriment (Johann), you can send your questions in the chat. Our moderator will pose them to the speakers in the Q&A. Do not unmute yourself unless asked to.
Share your thoughts with your fellow jurors in the discussion part. We will ask you to turn on your webcam and microphone. Please try to use headphones and keep yourself muted when you are not talking.
Vote. At the beginning and end of our event, we will ask you to answer the question: “Does personalised advertisement or ‘microtargeting’ add a net benefit or detriment to society?” Your vote is anonymous to other participants, yet our researchers will be able to see how you voted at the beginning and end of the event. After matching your first with your last vote, we will delete your name. It will not appear in our reports.
How can I prepare?
Download Zoom. Log in and set your name to be the same as on your application. Make sure that your webcam is working.
Check your internet connection. We would recommend a speed of at least 10 MB/s. You can test your speed here.
Read the briefing on microtargeting. No experience or knowledge is required for the event. However, if you want a head start on the topic, you can read our briefing. It includes potential arguments for both sides and an overview of current practices.

We will select between 20 and 30 jurors.

No, but we try to make it as close as possible while also ensuring that there is a diversity of views present. Our jury is selected by an algorithm that tries to find the best balance respective to age, gender, and ethnicity. We also try to have an equal split between people who are generally supportive of microtargeting and who oppose it.
